4 Web Design Trends I LOVE

Posted by Martha Ormiston on February 13, 2014

I work on many different kinds of web projects here at Fission Strategy. Because we are so versatile and work with a variety of organizations, I am constantly searching the web for all sorts of #designspiration. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’ve compiled a list of some of the web design trends and examples that I LOVE right now and can’t stop looking at!

Cross Platform Hashtag Campaigns

I love sites that pull in Instagram photos, tweets, and all sorts of other goodness to curate a full width grid of content. It's so cool to see people coming together online. The best part is that these sites are constantly (almost instantaneously) updated and changing before your very eyes. What a better way to keep content fresh and compelling!

Full Width Masonry Grid Layouts

You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again! No longer is the 960px width rule of web design relevant! Nowadays, thanks to responsive design, websites can be as wide as your browser allows. I love the use of full width in web design (why waste the margin!?), especially when it is paired with mixed width masonry grid layouts. See the example below:

Scroll Triggered Animation

Scroll triggered animations are increasingly popular for petitions, mission statements, campaigns, and interactive infographics. They can be fun, informative, and both capture and keep a user's attention throughout the whole scrolling experience.

Outline Buttons

There's a little trend right now where buttons are just outlines with text in the middle and when a user hovers over them they light up and fill with color. It’s so cute! I expect it will be temporary -- it’s probably inspired by iOS7 -- but mostly, it’s super cute. Especially when layered on top of huge photos.
