Cheryl Contee – In Conversation with Speaker Nancy Pelosi at Netroots Nation
posted by Cheryl Contee on August 3, 2010
"There are twelve TV cameras on you and a Fox News truck out back. The Speaker will be here in five minutes. Good luck."
When my friend, Mary Rickles of Netroots Nation, spoke those words to me, I knew this was real. Hundreds of Netroots Nation attendees from every state were already mingling with each other and sipping their second (or third) cups of coffee. It was just 8:30 am, which is early for folks who enjoy tweeting into the wee hours of the night. I was about to share a stage with the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. And to think, some people say that dreams don't come true!
I spent an enjoyable hour with Nancy Pelosi, covering a wide variety of important topics submitted via Jack and Jill Politics, Daily Kos, Twitter, Facebook and email. The Speaker answered questions about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Youth Promise Act, the DREAM Act, Social Security, the Fair Sentencing Act, unemployment and more. The Speaker brought a surprise video message from President Obama with her which was welcomed by the thousands of people in attendence and the millions more watching online and on the air.
The Speaker's appearance at Netroots Nation has received an impressive amount of coverage both in traditional media (theWashington Post, C-SPAN, Fox News and more) and in new media, particularly Twitter. Here are some highlights from the Twitterverse:

I was also honored to be mentioned by name in Christine Pelosi's (the Speaker's daughter) article for the Huffington Post:
"At the first netroots convention in June 2006 -- called Yearlykos -- there was a question "should more women and people of color be blogging?" By 2010 we had a woman of color -- Cheryl Contee, aka Jill Tubman of www.jackandjillpolitics.com --interviewing America's first woman Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi - as well as expanded ranks of women bloggers, presenters, and candidates."
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Netroots Nation panel. Take a look at the the full interview on C-SPAN, and let us know what you think!
