3 Ways Technology is Impacting Elections

Posted by Taylor Dankmyer on November 5, 2013

Happy Election Day! It’s an off-off year election, so only a small portion of Americans are voting today. However, there are big elections set in New Jersey and Virginia for Governor and various mayoral races around the country, including New York City.

Tech is impacting elections in all kinds of ways, and we've highlighted some examples below.

1. Communities United for Police Reform’s Stop & Frisk Campaign

Fission worked with Communities United for Police Reform to develop a video-focused site on the problems and issues with Stop and Frisk. The well-produced and impactful videos have made reforming stop and frisk a core issue in the Mayoral campaign, especially for Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio.

The campaign featured videos that highlighted stories of a teen, police officer, and pastor. The teen video of Kasiem Walters has over 100,000 views, and was shared 2,700 times! It was featured on mainstream media, including The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.

Kasiem's video seemed to have impacted the de Blasio ad featuring his son, Dante, which an aide to another Democratic primary candidate said “killed us.”

2. OurTime Voter Registration App

Back in September, we updated the OurTime voter registration app with registration functionality for more states. Now a total of 19 states allow online voter registration through the app.

While some states do allow for same day voter registration, none of those states have elections today, so you’re out of luck if you’re trying to register and vote today. However, take the opportunity now while voting is so fetch to get yourself registered.

Check out the app today, or at the very least, watch this hilarious video from Sarah Silverman:

3. Leadership Conference’s “Every Voter Count” Video Promotion

One of the most pressing issues during the 2012 elections was the expansion of Voter ID laws, and the impact of these laws on minority and senior communities. Working with The Leadership Conference, Fission helped to promote the “Every Voter Counts” video on YouTube and relevant resources that would educate people in key states on their voting rights.

During the campaign, traffic to the Leadership Conference website increased by almost 70%. Most significant of all was an increase of over 400% in mobile traffic to the Leadership Conference’s website in October 2012. Also in October, the campaign reached over 220,000 people on Facebook, and tweets were seen by over 420,000 people on Twitter. Now that’s increased awareness!

We’ve done similar work on Voting Rights with the NAACP LDF.
