Nonprofit Email Design - 2014 Best Practices
Posted by Martha Ormiston on April 4, 2014
As both Fission’s Creative Director and Lead Designer, I have to be constantly on the lookout for ideas, innovations, #designspiration, and up and coming digital trends. Recently, one of our awesome interns, Josh Dillon, signed me up for a bunch of email newsletters (to add to my already large collection), so that relevant email #designspiration would come right to my inbox.
As you could imagine, I now get A LOT more email. It would be pretty impossible to get any work done if I read every single newsletter that came in my inbox… so I only read the best designed ones! The examples below are all emails that caught my eye and had me take note of some recent email design trends and best practices.
1. THE RESPONSIVE EMAIL
It doesn’t take much to make an email responsive from a design and dev standpoint - however it makes a world of difference as to how your emails perform in the hands of your list subscribers.
2. THE “GET RIGHT TO THE POINT” EMAIL
The goal of these emails is to get the reader to click a link ASAP. How do they do it? By providing concise snippets of text, and structuring the messaging to act more as a hook to carry the user to a landing page. These emails minimize distraction, and stick a big call to action button in the body content, giving the user only one option on how to proceed.
3. THE EMAIL WITH SOCIAL SHARING
This comes particularly handy in emails that may have a lot of content inside them. I say this because often times, users (myself included) are intimidated by a “wall of text” that our brains simply just don’t want to read. Additionally, some spam filters out there may translate too much text as junk mail. By including a few images, or in this case, images and share buttons, not only do you break up that huge wall of text, but you also get the opportunity to have your email transcend the inbox, and have an impact in social media.
