Responsive Design for Nonprofits

Posted by Martha Ormiston on August 6, 2013

Responsive web design is more than just a design trend – it is designing for the now, and the future of web browsing. Besides the obvious benefits of improved user experience on phones and tablets, responsive design saves both money and time because only one site and one set of analytics needs to be maintained. Not only does a site use a single URL to help users interact and share content easier, but Google also mentions that it helps their algorithms index site content as well.

Most importantly, responsive design is flexible and allows your site to look great and function on any size tablet or smartphone. And seeing as how there are thousands of models of web enabled smartphones, feature phones, and tablets – that is a pretty great perk.

Monetate Ecommerce Quarterly reported in Q1 of 2013, 10.58% of web usage was on tablets, and 10.44% of web usage was on smartphones. That is up nearly 100% since Q1 of 2012. Microsoft suggests that in 2014, mobile internet usage will take over desktop internet usage.

Responsive design is especially important for nonprofit organizations. By improving overall website functionality which allows for  engagement with the public no matter what device they are using, nonprofits can further their outreach, increase online giving, and provide a much easier way for someone to go from being an online user to an offline participator and get more deeply involved with that organization.

Below is a showcase of nonprofits that employ beautiful looking and functioning responsive design. To see the responsiveness in action, visit the following URLs and drag your browser window smaller. The layout will change before your very eyes!
