Solving the “Tragedy of Advocacy:” A New Project for Jake
Posted by Jake Brewer on June 12, 2013
One of the questions we ask often at Fission is, “What problem most needs solving right now?”
Once asked, we find it’s nearly impossible for us not to address it in some way. Our minds, our hearts, our team and our partners, just seem to gravitate toward it once the intention has been put forth.
Sometimes this is a technical hurdle that’s keeping us from mobilizing more people. Sometimes it’s a social issue that is affecting communities particularly hard. Sometimes it’s many things at once.
For the last five years, I’ve had such a problem on my mind and been involved in myriad efforts towards its resolution: “How do we solve the ‘Tragedy of Advocacy’? How do we create a better, more-productive, and differently-incentivized relationship between decision-makers (e.g. Congress, mayors, CEOs, etc) and campaigns (people who start and join things like petitions)?”
Starting this month, I’ve been offered the opportunity to try to tackle this problem on a large scale with one of Fission’s long-time friends and partners, Change.org.
While I will remain a partner at Fission and continue to guide and contribute to strategy on campaigns and projects with the company, this new initiative at Change.org will be where I spend the majority of my time.
Fission is family, and you don’t “leave” family – so I’m not gone. I’m just off helping solve the problem my heart tells me the world most needs me to work on right now.
Looking forward to continuing to see and work with y’all in different ways in the months and years ahead!
