Vancouver Connects with Residents via Facebook

posted by Roz Lemieux on July 21, 2011

The City of Vancouver wanted to hear from local residents and business owners. So much so, that they called on Fission Strategy to create an open dialogue Facebook App where Vancouver residents could post their thoughts and ideas that would help re-shape the city with a strict focus on the transportation opportunities.

At The City of Vancouver we're keen to hear from residents and businesses on a variety of issues. One of the ways we're engaging the public is through this web portal.  Here you'll find links to web sites,  background reports and videos on issues of interest, and we encourage you to give us your thoughts in the discussion forums. Go to our current forums and have your say.

The web portal Fission Strategy built for the City of Vancouver allows the public to engage and post their opinions in discussion forums revolving around the Draft Capital PlanTransportation, and Housing. Officials posed questions regarding better commutes, transportation strategies and changes that needed to be made within the city.

The transportation forum was active with concerned residents.  They proposed improving conditions for cyclists and pedestirans, encouraging safety on the road, and lesser wait times for mass transit, amongst other ideas.  The City of Vancouver Transportation Department has been quite engaged with residents recommendations thanks to the Facebook App, and has responded to citizens concerns.

As a result of the feedback gathered through the Facebook App, Vancouver's Transportation Plan for 2012 will include creating a new bike network strategy that improves routes for both cyclists and pedestrians including seperated areas downtown.  The city plans to increase bike safety awareness through a proposed education program while planning a strategy that encourages cycling instead of using overcrowded transit services.

The city has addressed concern over long waiting times for mass transit services by increasing rapid transit in specific neighborhoods including Broadway Corridor as well as surrounding regions for suburban commuters.  By doing this people will be able to travel both to and around Vancouver faster, and the city will benefit from visitors traveling from neighboring areas.

The efforts of Fission Strategy to work with the city of Vancouver through this Facebook App has resulted in a cooperative relatonship between city officials and residents. This relationship is expected to continue as the city plans on additional improvements through 2012.
