Fission is seeking a strong php/javascript PHP/LAMP senior developer. We develop leading edge highly interactive web applications for cause-oriented organizations. 

Most of our work is in PHP, Javascript (jQuery), HTML5/CSS3, and CodeIgniter on Linux servers with MYSQL db. We use many standard APIs (Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter, CRMs, etc). 

Fission is a distributed team with lead developers in Atlanta and Boston. We communicate via Skype/Google hangouts/email and have created a supportive development team where we share code, learn from each other, and attend workshops to keep up with the latest trends.

We’re looking for a select team member who has fluency in coding, strong analytical troubleshooting skills, and the ability to interact with users to build real world solutions that exceed their expectations. This is a contract position which may become permanent.

Fission Strategy is looking for a Front-end Developer who will be involved in developing, testing & launching technical and creative solutions for our dynamic clients. As our new Front-end Developer, you will be working closely with designers to provide insight as to the feasibility of their concepts as well as sharing your vision for new possibilities to consider. You’ll also work closely with back-end developers to integrate front-end solutions with server-side code (most often PHP). Most of the time you’ll be working with an off-the-shelf or custom CMS, so you’ll work closely with our design and dev team to integrate designs seamlessly into the chosen technology. Please note that while you will inevitably be slicing some portions of designs, we outsource the majority of our slicing work to a third-party shop - as such, your focus will begin with concepting / feasibility studies during Discovery and Design phases, followed by oversight of the slicing process (coordinating with third-parties), and finally integrating and enhancing the sliced templates which are returned to us.


  • Work closely with UX and visual designers, project managers, back-end and other front-end developers to implement versatile solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with designers to create beautiful webpages with acute attention to detail
  • Enriching user experiences through the implementation of designs
  • Discussing technical solutions with clients and providing innovative new ideas
  • Maintaining a high awareness of industry standards and trends (particularly in regard to accessibility, usability, and emerging technologies) and keeping team members informed as appropriate, with a view to incorporating these in future projects
  • Providing accurate timing estimates on work.


  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 3 years relevant work experience
  • An expert level of HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript (jQuery a plus)
  • Proficiency in PHP and familiarity with popular PHP-based frameworks / platforms
  • Experience with Git version tracking
  • Experience with responsive design and development
  • Developing cross-browser and cross-platform compatible solutions
  • Experience integrating with server-side code to produce dynamic pages
  • Good understanding of Web Accessibility
  • Experience in AJAX techniques
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics
  • Knowledge of best practices in HTML email templates
  • Ability to manage your own time, and work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Communications skills for dialogue with our clients.
  • Build UI templates, manage stylesheets.


  • Information architecture / UX design (schematic diagramming, sitemapping & wireframing)
  • Experience and interest in visual design process
  • Iterative & innovative development approach
  • Experience with performance testing and optimization solutions
  • Experience with common advocacy-oriented CRMs such as Salsa, Blue State Digital, Convio, ActionKit, Salesforce, etc.
  • Familiarity with web browser implementations of SVG

New Media Internship

Location: Washington, DC

Hours and Duration: Quarterly 2014; 20-40 hours per week

Compensation: $1450 per month for full time interns. $725 for part time interns (20 hours a week). Academic credit may also be available depending on your institution’s requirements.

We are largely a "virtual" company of 20 people -- our team is spread out across the US -- but we have a brick and mortar office in Washington, DC where interns will work.

Position overview: Fission Strategy seeks a New Media Intern to provide support in the development and implementation of online outreach and advocacy campaigns. This position will provide the opportunity to work with a broad variety of non-profit organizations on a range of issues. Interns get direct, hands-on experience with online campaigning, social media, campaign research planning, data analysis, and operations projects.

Responsibilities will vary based on experience, expertise, and interest and may include: implementing social media outreach campaigns, monitoring and evaluating client social media campaigns, researching and implementing marketing campaigns, and researching emerging new media tools and trends. Interns will also assist with marketing activities of Fission Strategy and Fission's sister company,

Academic credit may be available for this position depending on your institution’s requirements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Very tech-savvy, with the ability to quickly learn online software

  • Strong research skills

  • Proven interest in new media and social media trends and tools and familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networks

  • Demonstrated interest in progressive issue advocacy

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with online organizing practices, including social network and blogger outreach.

  • Competence in HTML, CSS, PHP, Java or related languages.

  • Familiarity with digital CRM or Advocacy Toolkits such as Salsa, Blue State Digital, Convio, ActionKit, etc.

  • Experience in online or grassroots organizing for nonprofit and/or political campaigns.

  • Previous media or web administration experience.

  • Familiarity with online advertising, including blog ads, traditional banner advertising, Facebook advertising, and search engine marketing.

  • Data collection and analysis skills, proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

  • Experience with Google Analytics.

  • Comfort with image manipulation or video editing and production.

  • Understanding of blogging and writing for the web, including navigation of blogging platforms such as WordPress.

  • Ability to write compelling email copy, with an understanding of what makes some emails more effective at generating action than others.

Candidates must be reliable and willing to commit for 3 months. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, have a strong work ethic, be willing to learn, and be excited about the opportunities new media provide to support advocacy campaigns. Candidates must have their own laptop, and be comfortable working independently.
