Our Time turned to Fission to use contemporary technology with the goal of registering hundreds of thousands of young people for the November 2012 Presidential election, so that the voice of the new generation is heard. OurTime’s goal was to reach millions of people in order to drive a significant number of new voter registrations.

Fission created a widget that mashed together a number of tools making it easy for people to begin, or even complete, the voter registration process online. Fission also created a Facebook app for the same purpose. The widget appeared on a number of partner websites including the Huffington Post.

A button that led to the widget appeared on the dashboard of Tumblr for a week, so that anyone who logged into Tumblr to edit their blogs saw the button. During that week, OurTime got 100,000 registrations. This was the first time that Tumblr had done something like this, helping to create groundbreaking scope for the online world.

The Facebook app appeared on the pages of the following influential people: Will Smith, Will.i.am, Jessica Alba, Eva Longoria, Lady Gaga, and Trey Songz. The Fission-led campaign got the message out to millions who otherwise would have been dismissive of a message through channels they don’t trust or care about, that registering to vote is important. The widget and app led to hundred of thousands of new registrations.

This campaign helped to change the course of the Presidential election in 2012 through engaging younger audiences in areas where they are powerful — online.
